Learn Spanish from Scratch 9: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Course for English Speakers

In this lesson, students will learn how to talk about their future plans in Spanish. The dialogue between Brian and Linda will serve as a model for the use of the future tense and conditional sentences.

Talking about Future Plans

Vocabulary:

  • el menú (the menu)
  • el pescado (the fish)
  • el futuro (the future)
  • los planes (the plans)
  • el médico/la médica (the doctor)
  • el hospital (the hospital)
  • Inglaterra (England)
  • Alemania (Germany)
  • la familia (the family)
  • la ley (the law)
  • el vino (the wine)
  • el camarero/la camarera (the waiter/waitress)

Brian: ¡Mira el menú! (Oh take a look at the menu!)

Linda: ¡Genial! ¡Voy a pedir el pescado! ¿Y tú? (Great! I will take the fish! And you?)

Brian: Probablemente también pida el pescado. ¡Aún no lo sé! (I will probably order the fish, too. I do not know yet!)

Linda: ¡Hablemos un poco sobre tu futuro! ¿Cuáles son tus planes? (Let us talk a little bit about your future! What are your plans?)

Brian: Voy a ser médico. (I am going to become a doctor.)

Linda: ¡Genial! (Great! And what are you going to do after that?)

(Afterwards, I am going to work in a hospital in England.)

Linda: ¿Y te vas a quedar en Londres? (And are you going to stay in London?)

Brian: Tal vez regrese a Alemania. Solo el tiempo lo dirá. Me gustaría tener una familia. (Perhaps I will go back to Germany. Only time will tell. I would like to have family.)

Linda: ¿De verdad? (Really?)

Brian: Sí, ¿por qué no? Jajaja. ¿Y tú? (Yeah, why not? Hahahaha. And you?)

Linda: Si te gusta, entonces te diré ahora mis sentimientos y planes. (If you like, then I will tell you now about my feelings and plans!)

Brian: ¡Me gustaría escucharlos! Cuéntame. (I would like to hear them! Tell me.)

(If I had the chance to do everything again, I would just do it again. But if I had studied, I would have studied medicine or law. If I stay here in London, I will marry a nice young man. If I had the choice, we would have a big family.)

(You are very honest and open, that is great.)

(If I say something, I always mean it.)

(And if I listen, I can always keep a secret.)

Linda: ¡Espero que sí! Porque si no, te arrancaría la cabeza. Jajaja. (I hope so! Because if you couldn’t, I would tear your head off. Hahahaha.)

(But before that, you would kiss me, if I asked you!)

Jajaja. ¡Oh mira, viene el camarero! (If you hadn’t just said that, I probably would have! Hahaha. Oh look, the waiter is coming!)
